Roxas Buying Vote for P1,000 For Each Filipino?

MANILA, Philippines – Blasting Mar Roxas’ promise to local government executives to expand the government’s bottom-up budgeting (BUB) program, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s camp accused the Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer of dangling government funds to win votes.

“Now we see a process of millions of government money being used as a ruse into voting for Roxas,” Duterte spokesman Peter Laviña told GMA News. “BUB is officially a campaign kitty of the administration bet.”

As contrasted with the traditional bottom-down approach of national officials dictating where the money should be allocated, the BUB allocates public funds based on the needs of LGUs and grassroots executives.

In his separate meetings with the League of Municipalities of the Philippines and the National Assembly of the Liga ng mga Barangay, Roxas vowed to release more funds to the tune of P100 billion per year for the BUB which started when he was still Interior Secretary.

However, Laviña accused Roxas of marking the lives of every Filipino for a mere P1,000 each in exchange for votes.

“Mar is holding the life of every Filipino hostage by dangling P1,000 at the start of his presidential campaign, conditioning it on his fate come May 9,” he said. “Clearly, the administration bet is resorting to bribery, offering money to local chief executives in the hope of winning their support.”

However, Laviña’s accusation was dismissed by LP spokesperson Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice who touted the benefits of the program in directly aiding the public at the grassroots level.

“It’s not a bribe but a program aimed at alleviating the lives of Filipinos. Mar is clean and his integrity has been untainted,” he said.
